Hallways are creepy. Especially when they lead into darkness. Double especially when there is a crazy crack going across the middle of the wall, and there are no pictures hanging, no windows framing and no bears a grazing. Do bears graze? Iunno. Basically put, an unusually dark end in a hallway that is without decoration, other than a jagged edge is creepy.
